Crochet A Trunk-Full O' Fun!


Taos Lacy Square Motif

I designed this square to teach a class on reading crochet charts at Taos Wool Festival.

The following are swatches I made and their resulting sizes:



Yarn hook finished size (Scroll down for images) 

Size 10 crochet cotton. Sample: Aunt Lydia's Classic 10

E (3.5 mm)

3- inch square

Size 1 (Sport) yarn. Sample: Gala Mixed fiber yarn

F (4.0 mm)

3.5-inch square

Size 3 light(DK) yarn. Sample: Berroco Mixer yarn

G (4.5 mm)

3.25-inch square

Size 3 light (DK) yarn. Sample: Bernat Sweety Mohair yarn

H (5.0 mm)

4-inch square

Size 4 Medium (worsted) yarn. Sample: Red Heart Supersaver

Try using different hook sizes to get the required square size for your project.



The JAYGO Technique: Join as you go, for the first square complete through round 4. For following squares, JAYGO creating a slip stitch instead of a chain where indicated on the chart and as noted in the pattern Joining Round 4 (below chart). Hold motifs wrong sides together. The square in progress is the WM or 'working motif.' The square to which the working motif is being joined is the JM 'joining motif.'



Special Stitches:



Beg Cl: Beginning cluster: Ch 2, (YO, insert hook, draw up a loop, draw through 2) twice, YO, draw through all 3 loops on hook.



Cl: Cluster: (YO, insert hook, draw up a loop, draw through 2) three times, YO, draw through all 4 loops on hook.



CS: Corner shell: (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in one space.



Beg V st: Beginning V stitch: Ch 3, dc in same st.



V st: V stitch: (Dc, ch 1, dc) in one stitch.



GC: Granny Corner: (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in one space.



Directions:



Ch 8. Join with a sl st to form a ring.



Round 1: Ch 4, (dc, ch 2) 7 times into ring. Sl st in second ch of beginning ch-4. 8 ch-2 spaces



Round 2: (Beg cl, ch 1, cl, ch 1) in ch-2 space. [(Cl, ch 1) twice in ch-2 space] 7 times. Sl st in beg cl. 16 cl sts and ch- 1 spaces.



Round 3: (Sl st, ch 1, sc, ch 1) in next ch-1 space. *CS in next ch-1 space, (ch 1, sc, ch 1) in next ch-1 space. 5 dc in next ch-1 sp, **(ch 1, sc, ch 1) in next ch-1 space. Repeat from * twice. Repeat from * to **. ch1, sl st in first sc. 4 CS, 4 5-dc shells, 8 sc.



Round 4: Beg V st in first sc, *ch 1, GC in CS, ch 1, V st in next sc, ch 2, sk 2 dc, sc in next dc, ch 2,** V st in next sc, repeat from * twice. Repeat from * to **. Sl st in second ch of beg V st. Finish off.

Joining Round 4: Beg V st in first sc, *ch 1, GC in CS, ch 1, V st in next sc, ch 2, sk 2 dc, sc in next dc, ch 2, V st in next sc, repeat from * once.


Join: Ch 1, 3 dc in CS, ch 1, sl st in GC of JM. 3 dc in same cs as last 3-dc on WM. Sl st in next ch-1 sp of JM. V st in next sc on WM. Sl st in ch-2 space of JM, ch 1, sk 2 dc, sc in next dc on WM. Ch 1, sl st in next ch-2 sp on JM. V st in next sc on WM. Sl st in next ch-1 sp of JM. 3 dc in CS of WM, sl st in GC of JM. Ch1, 3 dc in same cs as last 3-dc on WM.


Finish WM: Ch 1, V st in next sc, ch 2, sk 2 dc, sc in next dc, ch 2, Sl st in second ch of beg V st. Finish off.
