Finishing square:
Cut yarn with a 4-inch tail. Using a yarn needle, bring the yarn through the top of the first hdc, then down through the top of the last hdc forming a loop above the ch-2 to resemble the top of a stitch. Weave the remainder of the tail under the stitches.
Assembly:
Line up each square stitch to stitch, beginning with a corner hdc, with wrong sides together, sc in the back loop of each hdc across on each side. Work in the same manner all around the bottom square. Finish off and weave in tails. (Assembly can be done with one strand of worsted weight.)
Optional: sc or rsc around the top.
