Beth's Eyelet Summer Headband

I hate having my hair in my eyes, and Texas summers are hot. So I decided to make this headband to wear in the summer. Button placement makes it easy to adjust the fit.

Materials: #4 Medium Worsted weight cotton or cotton blend, an G/6 (4.0 - 4.5 mm) crochet hook, and 2 ¾ inch flat buttons.

From top to bottom, samples were made with Berroco® Captiva ™ Medium weight mixed fiber yarn in color 5558 Orchid, Bernat® Handicrafter™ cotton in Caramel, and Peaches & Creme® cotton in Turquoise.

Gauge: 9 sc = 2 inches, 9 sc rows = 2 inches.

Notes: (Optional) Use the alternative turning ch on the dc rows instead of the ch-3.

Alternative beginning dc turning ch. Draw up a loop in the first stitch, yo draw through 2, insert hook under left 2 vertical bars in the first drawn up loop. Draw up a loop. Yo and draw through 2. (This should be the same size as the dc stitches.) The bottom headband in the photo used this technique.

Parentheses at the end of rows indicate the number of stitches or stitch pattern in row.

Sc decrease: Draw up a loop in each of the next 2 stitches, (3 loops on hook) yo, draw through all 3 loops.

Instructions: Ch 6, sl st to form a ring.

Row 1: Ch 1, make 3 sc in ring. Turn.

Rows 2-4: Ch 1, sc in each sc across. Turn.

Row 5: Ch 1, sc in first sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc. Turn. (4 sc)

Rows 6-10: Ch 1, sc in each sc across. Turn.

Row 11: Ch 1, 2 sc in first sc, sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc. Turn. (6 sc)

Rows 12 -16: Ch 1, sc in each sc across. Turn.

Row 17: Ch 1, sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in each of next 2 sc, sc in next 2 sc. Turn. (8 sc)

Rows 18-20: Ch 1, sc in each sc across. Turn.

Eyelet rows:

Row 21: Ch 3, (Counts as dc throughout pattern) Dc in each sc across. Turn. (8 dc)

Row 22: Ch 3, dc in next 2 dc, ch 2, skip 2 dc, dc in next 2 dc. Dc in top of turning ch. Turn.(3 dc, ch-space, 3 dc)

Row 23: Ch 3, dc in next dc, ch 2, sc in ch space, ch 2, skip next dc, dc in next dc, dc in top of ch-3. Turn. (2 dc, ch space, sc, ch space, 2 dc)

Row 24: Ch 3, dc in next dc, dc in next ch-2 space, ch 2, dc in next ch-2 space, dc in next dc, dc in top of ch-3. Turn. (3 dc, ch-space, 3 dc)

Row 25: Ch 3, dc in next 2 dc, 2 dc in ch-2 space, dc in next 2 dc, dc in top of turning ch. Turn. (8 dc)

Rows 26-45: Repeat rows 22-25 five more times. (6 eyelet patterns.)

Row 46: Ch 1, sc in each dc across. Sc in top of turning ch. Turn. (8 sc)

Rows 47-49: Ch 1, sc in each sc across. Turn.

Row 50: Ch 1, sc in next 2 sc, sc decrease twice, sc in next 2 sc. Turn.

Rows 51-55: Ch 1, sc in each sc across. Turn. (6 sc)

Row 56: Ch 1, sc decrease, sc in next 2 sc, sc decrease. Turn.

Rows 57-61: Ch 1, sc in each sc across. Turn. (4 sc)

Row 62: Ch 1, sc in next sc, sc decrease, sc in next sc. Turn.

Rows 63-67: Ch 1, sc in each sc across. Turn. (3 sc)

Ch 4, skip 2 sc, sl st in last sc. Turn.

Border: Ch 1, 6 sc in ch-4 space. Working into ends of sc rows, sc in each sc row. Working in ends of dc rows, make 2 sc in the dc and 1 sc in the turning chains. (opposite if using alternative turning ch.) Make 6 sc in the end ch- 6 loop. Repeat across other side of headband. Sl st in first sc, end off yarn and hide tails.

Finishing:

Try on headband and mark where buttons should be placed. ( Make it a comfortable fit and not too tight because cotton tends to shrink a little in the wash. ) Sew one button on the inside and one on the outside where marked.
