Basic Beret or Tam

Crochet Beret or Tam

Size: 23 1/2 inch around head (Adult). It can be adjusted to fit.

Materials:

One skein of worsted weight yarn. A size I/9 5.5 mm crochet hook.

optional: 24 inches of 5/8 inch elastic.

Gauge: First 2 rounds make a circle 2 1/2 inches in diameter.

Notes:

All rounds are joined with a slip stitch.

Count beginning ch-3 as 1 dc.

To increase: Make 2 dc in one stitch.

To decrease: Yo, draw up a lp in next st, yo and draw thru 2 lps. Yo draw up a lp in next st, yo and draw thru 2 lps. Yo and draw thru all 3 lps on hook.

Instructions: Using the magic loop, or a loose slip knot,

Round 1: Make 12 dc into loop.

Round 2: Increase in each dc around. (24 dc)

Round 3: Dc in same st as joining, dc in next dc. (increase in next dc, dc in next dc) around. (36 dc)

Round 4: Dc in next dc, (2 dc in next dc, dc in next 2 dc) around hat. ending round with an increase in the last dc. (48 dc)

Round 5: Dc in same st as joining, (dc in next 3 dc, increase) around hat. Ending round with making a dc in each of the last 3 dc. (60 dc)

Rounds 6-9 (or more): Continue making rounds adding one stitch between increases each round until your hat is desires size in diameter. Sample is 11 inches in diameter and 7 dc between increases on round 9 (108 dc). (increasing by 12 evenly each round)

Rounds 10 -11: Work 1 dc in each dc around. (108 dc)

Round 12 (begin decreases): Dc in next 6 dc (7dc counting chain), decrease, (make 7 dc, decrease) around. (96 dc)

Round 13: Dc in next 5 dc, decrease, (make 6 dc, decrease) around. (84 dc)

Round 14: Dc in next 4 dc, decrease, (make 5 dc, decrease) around (72 dc)

Try on for size. Hat should fit loosely.

Band:

Round 15: Sc in each dc around. Try on again to determone if you need to increase or decrease stitches to make it fit properly. (72 sc)

Rounds 16- 19: Sc in each sc around. (you can finish off on any sc round if you do not want a band)

Round 20: in BLO sc in each sc around.

Rounds 21-29: Sc in each sc around.

Round 30 (hem): Fold under hem at round 20. sl st in palce. Run elastic through hem if desired.

Break off yarn and weave in tails.
